Plantas, animais e seus derivados são biomassa. A utilização como combustível pode ser feita a partir de sua forma bruta, como madeira, produtos e resíduos agrícolas, resíduos florestais, resíduos pecuários, excrementos de animais e lixo. Ao contrário das fontes fósseis de energia, como o petróleo e o carvão mineral, a biomassa é renovável em curto intervalo de tempo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A renovação da biomassa ocorre através do ciclo do carbono, ou seja, a decomposição ou a queima de matéria orgânica ou seus derivados provoca a liberação de CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;&amp;nbsp;na atmosfera. As plantas, através da fotossíntese, transformam o CO&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;&amp;nbsp;e água em hidratos de carbono, liberando oxigênio. Dessa forma, o uso adequado da biomassa não altera a composição média da atmosfera ao longo do tempo.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; Parte dessa energia acumulada é empregada pelo ecossistema para sua própria manutenção. A queima da biomassa ou de seus derivados provoca a liberação de CO2 na atmosfera. As plantas, através da fotossíntese, transformam esse CO2 nos hidratos de carbono, liberando oxigênio. Assim, a utilização da biomassa, desde que não seja de forma predatória, não altera a composição da atmosfera.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:180%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Materiais utilizáveis&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UUQBey0aYFM/SiHV7NPr0-I/AAAAAAAAAJs/QWMpqrCYzJQ/s1600-h/biomass-2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341785846182564834" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 208px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 182px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UUQBey0aYFM/SiHV7NPr0-I/AAAAAAAAAJs/QWMpqrCYzJQ/s400/biomass-2.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As biomassas mais utilizadas são: a &lt;em&gt;lenha&lt;/em&gt; (já representou 40% da produção energética primária no Brasil), o &lt;em&gt;bagaço da cana-de-açúcar&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;galhos&lt;/em&gt; e &lt;em&gt;folhas de árvores&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;papéis&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;papelão&lt;/em&gt;, etc. A biomassa é o elemento principal de diversos novos tipos de combustíveis e fontes de energia como o bio-óleo, o biogás, o BTL e o biodiesel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:180%;"&gt;Conversão de energia&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inicialmente, a energia contida na biomassa tem que ser transformada em calor para depois ser transformado em energia elétrica, através, principalmente, de tecnologias baseadas no ciclo do vapor. Temos os seguintes métodos de conversão:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Combustão direta&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: é a queima do material por aquecimento direto. Biomassa como madeira, lixo, palha e biogás (gerado pela decomposição do lixo, composto basicamente pelo gás metano, CH4, e dióxido de carbono) podem ser queimados para produzir gases quentes ou aquecimento de vapor d'água. É a mais comum e simples técnica de aproveitamento da biomassa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Digestão anaeróbica&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: converte matéria orgânica numa mistura de metano e dióxido de carbono. Misturas de lixo, esgoto, restos de indústrias de alimentos, fezes de animais e água, são colocadas em um tanque de digestão, na ausência de oxigênio. Os gases produzidos são utilizados em tecnologias a vapor para a geração de energia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Pirólise&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: é a degradação términa por calor na ausência de oxigênio. Biomassa como madeira, lixo, e outros, são utilizados, e produzem gases, óleo combustível e carvão.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Fermentação alcoólica&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: o álcool combustível é produzido fermentando-se o açucar da cana e, então, separando-se o álcool da mistura por destilação. Além da cana, trigo, beterraba, batatas, mandioca, papel, cerragem e palha contém açúcar ou celulose, que podem ser convertidos para álcool via fermentação.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:180%;"&gt;Produtos derivados da biomassa&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alguns exemplos de produtos derivados da biomassa são:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bio-óleo&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: líquido negro obtido por meio do processo de pirólise cujas destinações principais são aquecimento e geração de energia elétrica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Bio-gás&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: metano obtido juntamente com dióxido de carbono por meio da decomposição de materiais como resíduos, alimentos, esgoto e esterco em digestores de biomassa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Biomass-to-liquids&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;: líquido obtido em duas etapas. Primeiro é realizado um processo de gasificação, cujo produto é submetido ao processo de Fischer-Tropsch. Pode ser empregado na composição de lubrificantes e combustíveis líquidos para utilização em motores do ciclo diesel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Etanol celulósico&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: etanol obtido alternativamente por dois processos. Em um deles a biomassa, formada basicamente por moléculas de célulose, é submetida ao processo de hidrólise enzimática, utilizando várias enzimas. O outro processo é composto pela execução sucessiva das três seguintes fases: gasificação, fermentação e destilação.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bioetanol "comum"&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;: feito no Brasil à base do sumo extraído da cana de açúcar (caldo-de-cana). Isto significa maior custo de investimento para a caldeira e os equipamentos para remoção de material particulado; Dificuldades no estoque e armazenamento; Ineficiente se forem usadas plantas pequenas;
